2011 Scholarship Winners

Central PA Scholarship Recipient:

ASHLEY MARIE SIMPSON

Ashley is the daughter of Paul "Drew" and Dawn Simpson –
Drew is a Local Union 645-Scranton

Ashley will be attending East Stroudsburg University pursing a degree in Elementary Education. Ashley's family is deeply rooted in the union as her grandfather was Fred "Butch" Schimelfenig, Business Agent and Executive Secretary Treasurer of the Central Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters before the merger. She states in her essay "even though unionism is not mentioned in schools anymore, I will find a way to make sure that my students understand that the unions have made this country what it is today."

W.R. Waterkotte Scholarship Recipient:

NICHOLAS BRIAN BEARDSLEY

Nicholas is the son of Brian and Amy Beardsley –
Brian is a member of Local Union 81-Erie.

Nicholas will be attending Kent State University in the fall. He is pursuing a degree in Architecture. In his essay, he states "my Dad was not only my role model – he was a catalyst in encouraging me to "tag along" to his varied, early job sites."

We wish both Ashley and Nicholas the best of luck as they enter this next phase of their lives.
