This years 2008 Waterkotte Memorial Scholarship winner is Walter P Kerin.  Walt has been accepted to the Penn State College of Engineering with an intended major in Electrical Engineering. Walt is the son of Walter and Yvonne Kerin. Walt stated in an essay attached to his application that he too has always enjoyed building and working with his hands and that he was taught at a very early age that he should do a fair day’s work for a fair day’s wage. He said his father Walt taught him of the improvement the union made in his job from job protection to increased wages and improved working conditions and thus the improvements that made in their standard
of living. Walt stated that he is extremely grateful to the benefits the carpenters union has provided his family and hopes that after college he can help support the unions and the families that belong to them. There is a long history of the union in young Walts family. His mother Yvonne is a union member at the Port Authority. His father Walt, his uncle Rusty Kerin and his grandfather Paul Greiner are all members of Carpenters Local Union 230. Congratulation to Walt and we wish you much success in the future.
