United Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners of America
40th General Convention
August 21-25, 2010
Las Vegas

Standing Strong/Building Tomorrow!

GENERAL PRESIDENT DOUGLAS J. MCCARRON
President McCarron told the delegates, “The union’s work is difficult and ongoing.” He told the delegates the UBC will not let other unions encroach on work that should be performed by Brotherhood members. “We have been building for 15 years and we will continue to build. We are organizing and fighting. We are not just defending ourselves.”

“We have faced unprecedented challenges over the past few years and stood strong. No doubt the future will bring challenges of its own. But we will face them the only way we know how: by fighting tirelessly on behalf of what’s right. Now let’s get to work building tomorrow.”

“While everyone else is blaming someone else and trying to get back on their feet, we’ll be on the job, bags on, ready to work, standing strong, building our union, building our future, building tomorrow.”

GENERAL VICE PRESIDENT DOUGLAS BANES
General Vice President Doug Banes stated, “I know I speak for every member here when I say thank you to those contractors for taking the step to partner with us – they did it BECAUSE THEY SAW WE HAVE THE SKILLS THEY NEED AND THE ATTITUDE THEY WANT. The most important skill is attitude.

If we are going to replace the negative image that was built up over the years, we have to bring the most skilled, productive workers in North America to the table.”

GENERAL SECRETARY-TREASURER ANDRIS J. SILINS
General Secretary-Treasurer Andy Silins told the delegates to the UBC’s 40th Convention that the Helmets to Hardhats program strengthens the Brotherhood and gives veterans an opportunity for rewarding careers when they hang up the uniform. “We owe these brothers and sisters so much,” Silins said. “We owe them the chance to look after their families the
way they looked after their comrades in arms.

The delegates left the convention charged up, ready to work. And as General President McCarron stated in his closing remarks, “While everyone else is blaming someone else and trying to get back on their feet, we’ll be on the job, bags on, ready to work… Standing strong, building our union, building our future, building tomorrow.”
